We are always delighted to be asked to help record oral histories for community groups, and recently had the pleasure of spending time in St.Mabyn hearing about the Peace Memorial Hall. 100 years on from being built through public subscription, the building has witnessed many a community event. From gardening clubs to a doctor’s surgery, dances to carnival queen choosing, it was fascinating to hear how the building has served the community through the generations.
These recordings will feed into a centenary tapestry created by the community with artist Jane McDonald, as well as a book and series of audio stories. A celebratory event to share these is planned in the Hall on Saturday 28th January 23. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, this project will create a valuable archive of the hall’s history as well as celebrating it’s current role in the community.
