Alongside our recent Withy Lore exhibition at the Museum of Cornish Life with artist Anna Pope, we enjoyed running a series of engagement events for all ages. This included being part of Helston Makes It and a special Families Day where families could weave, share and create.
Intergenerational weaving
There was also an opportunity for a lucky group of young people to learn from 5 master withy pot makers, as they spent 2 cosy days weaving together surrounded by local history.
Traditionally withy pots are made in the wintertime, when the willow is at its best to weave It was lovely to honour this tradition by enabling knowledge and skills to pass down the generations, as would have been common. This was held inside the museum’s drill hall, situated below our Withy Lore exhibition and was open to the public to observe, provoking further conversation. They did an amazing job and we’re delighted that connections have been made that will continue to grow.
